The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the world's most beautiful bridges and a marvel of modern engineering. With its tremendous orange towers, sweeping main cables, and amazing span, it is a sensory experience of color, sound, and light. Driving across the bridge is a thrill, racing under the towers, but the half-hour walk across lets you feel the bridge's grandeur and absorb panoramic views of Downtown and the San Francisco Bay. Take a guided bus tour across the Golden Gate Bridge, learn about the bridge's history and see incredible sights, from Sausalito to Golden Gate Park. The Bridge Pavilion offers information, exhibits, gifts and souvenirs.

Before you go


On the northside, the Vista Point parking lot is free and open 7 am to 7 pm daily with a 4-hour time limit. Metered parking is available in the southeast parking lot.

Local Tips

The best way to see the Golden Gate Bridge is walking along the pedestrian walkway or biking along the other side. The Bridge is 3.6 miles long and the easy walk takes about 1-2 hours.  Warm clothes or a jacket are essential if you are taking the breezy walk or bike ride across.  Dogs allowed on leashes.


Is there a pedestrian fee to access the Golden Gate Bridge walkways?
It is free to access the pedestrian walkways and bike path across the bridge. Walking or cycling across the bridge is a thrill with amazing views of the San Francisco Bay Area!

What is the elevation of the bridge roadway?
At mid span, the height of the top of the roadway is an average of 270.9 feet above the bay waters. At the south abutment of the Bridge, the height of the roadway is 186.5 feet. The rise in elevation is 84.4 feet. .
